Controlled heat treatments of experimental Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloys and their influence on some fundamental properties; examination of principal results obtained in recent years in investigations conducted by Italian Light Metals Research Institute; these studies have made it possible to specify most suitable methods for elaboration of these alloys; through appropriate modifications of composition, thermal cycles profoundly different from traditional ones were set up, so as to eliminate shortcomings of commercial alloys containing chromium; interesting results were obtained by substituting zirconium and zirconium plus silver for chromium and by using special isothermal and two-step aging cycles.
