General expressions for stress are derived for two-layer systems subjected to surface line or strip load; equations developed may be used to calculate stresses in supporting layered media for embankments, continuous footings, pavement systems, compressor-station foundation mats, canals, etc, if supporting media can be approximately represented as two-layer plane strain system.
