Yielding and locking of confined sand
Experimental results of stress-strain behavior of sand during confined compression show that stress-strain curve is S-shaped, with yielding for small stress changes and locking as stress change is increased further; in addition, modulus during small stress changes is found to be consistent with modulus backfigured from seismic wave velocity; theory for behavior of regular array of elastic spheres is used in investigation and effect of rate of loading is shown.
