Study on submerged breakwaters
Experimental study of functions and maintenance of submerged breakwaters is compared with results of field observations conducted at Niigata west coast; reason for slumping of submerged breakwater is sand movement along base of structure due to large hydraulic gradient between inside and outside regions of structure; slumping of structure may be stopped by mounding of 4-ton tetrapod blocks; maintenance device by filling tetrapod blocks seems effective; hydrodynamic analysis shows that height of submerged structure should be 70-80% larger than water depth to achieve damping effect.
