Fill settlement despite vertical sand drains
Marsh deposit beneath 7-ft high embankment for airport runway was stabilized by vertical sand drains and continuous sand blanket beneath fill, followed by surcharge loading to twice embankment height; soil borings and laboratory tests made four years after construction showed that six feet of primary consolidation should have been anticipated, of which only 1.5 ft would occur during specified 3-mo stabilization period.
