Optimizing haul fleet size using queueing theory
Primary innovation is development of Poisson ratio that can be computed easily using only slide rule or desk calculator; it is presented not as end result, but as partial means of bringing more scientific decision-making tools to construction industry; method involves technique, hypothesized by L.R.Shaffer of Illinois, of determining optimum number of trucks that will cause minimum lost time due to loader standing idle while waiting for truck; above model is used for deriving simple Poisson ratio that could be used by any construction engineer; explanation of use of this formula and example are also presented.
