Influence of open porosity on resistance of mortars and concretes to aggressive solutions; graphs presented show influence of open porosity determined by means of gas permeability measurements on resistance of mortars to attack by solutions containing sulfates; lowered resistance to aggressive attack is attributable to formation of ettringite-like phases, gypsum and brucite; cause of sulfate resistance of portland cements containing no C3A is shown to reside in low rate of hydration of calcium aluminate ferrites rich in iron oxide, while sulfate resistance of portland blast furnace cements with high content of slag is due to reduced availability of lime.
