Long-term storage of lignite at Garrison dam, Riverdale, N. Dak
Stockpiles containing 2.3 million tons of lignite constructed in period 1948-56 demonstrate successful stable long-term storage of lignite; uniform and thorough compaction of each of 1-ft-thick layers by which piles were constructed produced bulk density of 70 lb/cu ft; air penetration into stockpiles was restricted to degree that prevents spontaneous heating or deterioration of stored lignite.
