Structural design to attain safer roadsides
Structural design plays large part in design of safer roadsides; progress in this field was made over past 30 yr and is continuing; large freeway signs requiring large supports are being made safer by new developments in breakaway posts and by judicious location; new developments in lighting are requiring fewer poles and these can be made with frangible bases; structural guardrail design is advancing with major improvements expected in near future; roadsides around bridges are also being made safer by use of more liberal clearances to parapets, piers and abutments or added protection by guardrail.
