Frictional characteristics of granite under high confining pressure
Investigation was made to examine effects of roughness and confining pressure on coefficient of friction and physical processes involved in frictional sliding (e.g., plastic flow or brittle fracture) of typical silicate rock, granite; in addition, experiments were designed to test Coulomb criterion of rock fracture, Orowan's theory for apparent ductility of rocks, and effective stress theory as applied to friction.
