Shear strength of sand under dynamic loading
Shear tests were carried out with modified Casagrande apparatus provided with glass windows permitting microphotographic study of shear process; results of static and dynamic tests are shown in graphs; results indicate that decrease in dynamic shear strength depends on shearing acceleration and/or dynamic stress, and is restricted to friction component of latter, cohesion component remaining unchanged; shearing process shows no discrete glide planes, but only glide zones.
