Effective stress evaluation for unsaturated soils
Methods are developed for evaluating effective stresses and shear strength parameters from laboratory shear, volume change and swelling pressure tests on unsaturated soil; effective stress principle is shown to relate changes in shear strength and surface elevation of natural profiles of unsaturated clay; these developments have important applications to design of earth embankments and shallow foundations on expansive clay.
