Improving river aeration at underflow and overflow dams
Addition of dissolved oxygen (DO) in flow through navigation dams can be significant contribution to DO resources of river receiving oxygen consuming organic material of wastewaters; methods included lowering tailwater elevation, increasing tailwater turbulence by employing fewer gates thus increasing amount of flow per gate, and installing bulkheads in gate openings causing river flow to spill over them and thus increasing turbulence; conversion of underflow gate structure to overflow condition by installing bulkheads and increasing downstream turbulence almost restored lost aeration capacity.
