Presplitting rock in presence of static stress field
Preliminary tests on presplitting rock in presence of in situ static stress field were undertaken to study influence of horizontal static stress field on creation of vertical presplit fracture plane; these tests indicated that it is easier to fracture rock parallel to in situ maximum compressive stress than in other directions; interaction of stress waves generated by detonating charges is probably responsible for starting tensile fractures between shotholes; expanding gases may propagate these initial cracks by wedging action.
