Important ideas taken from 241 papers prepared for Congress on Rock Mechanics at Lisbon, Portugal, in Sept 1966 are condensed here; authors were from 31 countries; only three languages were permitted; 155 papers were in English, 45 in French and 41 in German; uniform terminology is needed in rock mechanics and system of codification to permit application of coded information beyond local area; stressed bolts grouted with cement or resin are useful; assumption of elastic rock behavior is warranted in design of tunnel linings; papers and discussions were generally oriented to determination of effect and control of joints, seams and fissures in rock.
