Study details various functions of base under concrete pavement and thickness requirement for each function; contribution to structural capacity of pavement by base and fact that provision of base thicker than about 3 to 5 in. for such purpose is uneconomical are shown by means of theoretical computations and research data; study reveals that in most of cases it may not be justified to provide base thicker than 6 in. for both roads and airfields; recommendations for base thicknesses.
