Model investigation of performance of vertical-shaft intake structure under heads up to 80 ft; study was conducted in 1- to 20-scale model of outlet works which reproduced portion of approach area, intake structure, outlet conduit, and hydraulic-jump type stilling basin; severe sub-atmospheric pressures which were detected in original design of morning glory intake and in elbow below intake were eliminated by providing vertical-shaft spillway of increased cross-sectional area relative to original morning glory spillway and streamlined rectangular conduit intake.
