Flammability characteristics of cellular plastics
Many applications of foamed polymers, e.g., thermal insulation, cushioning, and packaging, involve fire hazard in varying degrees; established factors limiting use of cellular plastics that may be exposed to fire are ease of ignition, flame spread, fire endurance, full contribution, smoke density, and products of combustion and pyrolysis; tests are described which measure these characteristics (ASTM, Bureau of Mines, Underwriters Laboratories, Rohn and Haas, Globar, chimney and tunnel tests, etc); results of some of these tests on materials of current significance.
