Amount of secondary deformation, measured when shear-testing laboratory sample of kaolin, is shown to depend largely on its effective stress state; such deformation does not appear to influence basic stress-strain curve for material; secondary deformation data from drained shear tests are decomposed into volumetric and shear components; creep in shear is interpreted as stress-dilatancy phenomenon, and as such may be contrasted with similar relationships which describe process of primary deformation in shear tests.
