Conditioning of retained austenite in high speed steel
Effect of martensite on kinetics of transformation of retained austenite was investigated; it is shown that presence of martensite coexisting with retained austenite during tempering not only accelerates conditioning of retained austenite but is necessary participant in conditioning process; quantitative model is presented which considers that martensite acts as sink for movement of carbon out of retained austenite during tempering at 1050 F; this model is in good agreement with experimental results.
