A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Improvement of Brazil's 460 mi leg of Pan Am Transversal Highway that will be completed in 1969; permanent and portable weigh stations will be employed to fight shortened road life; to preclude pumping failures due to expansive pit-run materials, 4 in. sand layer is placed above subbase; critical concentration of filler in asphalt mix is determined by Highway Research Board method, improved to take into account difference in filler particle shape and size; superficial erosion on slopes was minimized with asphalt emulsion-portland cement mixture; precast concrete slabs are tied back by steel bar or cable post-tensioned in soil.
