Vibration and damping of aluminum overhead sign structures
Wind-induced vibration characteristics of 78-ft span aluminum overhead sign structure and damping requirements to prevent significant vibration were investigated; stresses of 12,900 psi were determined in chord member near splicing flange when bolts were tightened; single amplitudes at midspan of structure as high as plus or minus 0.44 in. were measured during wind-induced vibration; single Stockbridgetype vibration damper, attached to test structure at midspan, prevented vibration in wind; laboratory tests of three models of dampers established efficiency of dampers for frequencies from about 4 to 11 cps.
