Record blasts move mountains as TVA quarries rock for dams
Material for Watauga rockfill dam obtained by driving network of tunnels 4 × 6 ft into mountain on one or more levels; explosive per cu yd of solid rock varied from 1 to 2 lb; explosives used per cu yd of loose rock was 0.53 to 0.70 lb at Watauga dam and 0.70 to 0.91 lb at South Holston dam where largest tunnel blast ever made required 1,363,000 lb; loading plan for this blast.
