Ancient Monuments Branch of Ministry of Works has undertaken preservation of many historic buildings through Great Britain; aim is to preserve and not to restore; as result of experience in maintaining structures of many periods and built in many kinds of material, some broad principles of preservation have emerged; removal of plant growth; fractures and voids; grouting and gravity grouting; etc.
