Prestressed concrete columns, 37 ft long, support aluminum trusses and carry rail for crane of 800 × 58.5 ft mill building at Alexandra Docks, Newport, Monmouthshire; columns were grouted into socket housings formed in footings; hollow columns used have 3 in. thick sidewalls and vary in section from 16 × 21 in. at top to 16 × 50 in. at bottom; solid type, precast in one piece, are 12 × 30 in. in cross section; data on manufacture and placing of columns.
