Control of roof and prevention of accidents from falls of rock and coal
Since 1906, about 30,000 men have been killed by falls of rock and coal in bituminous coal mines, and more than 7000 in Pennsylvania anthracite mines; little improvement made during 40 yr; in majority of cases where roof has collapsed with injury to one or more persons, it was because pillars were unduly weakened or artificial support was inadequate.
