Aggregate reaction with cement alkalies
Test specimens composed of high alkali cement and reactive aggregate (opal) were exposed to conditions promoting cracking and expansion; petrographic examination indicates that chemical reaction results in liquefaction, swelling and migration of reaction products; liquefied gel fills pores; reaction at pore wall forms membrane through which osmosis takes place thus causing expansion and cracking. (See also - discussion v 20 n 4 pt 2 Dec p 632 (6 p))
