Causeway built to withstand hurricanes
Rickenbacker Causeway extending about 4 mi from Miami, Fla, to Key Biscayne, consists of 3 bridges of 3457 ft, 2090 ft and 662 ft, respectively, and sand embankments with flat slopes; precast sheetpile bulkheads protect fills adjacent to bridges which are supported on piles and built as simple steel beam spans with deck of composite construction and parapets of special curved design; construction of deck expedited by use of all welded steel forms.
