Steel pipe 48 in. in diam with inside and outside coating of coal tar pitch enamel, and reinforced concrete pipes from 48 to 96 in. in diam, installed to carry Colorado River water to San Diego county; tunnels drilled by means of automatic feed drills; tunnel ventilation; trenches for pipes excavated with 1 1/2 and 2 1/2-yard backhoes; pipe hauling done with crawler cranes.
