10,950-hp "Western Chief" diesel powered 1500-ton suction dredge is completing excavation at Fort Randall dam in South Dakota; each of six 1600 hp diesel engines drives 1200 kw d-c generator; 450-hp engines drive 300 kw d-c and a-c generators; main pump has 36-in. suction and 30-in. discharge and can pass solids 18 in. in diam; components were delivered from 31 manufacturers and dredge was assembled at dam site.
