Sand bypassing at Santa Barbara, California
Construction of breakwater interrupted littoral drift of sand; man-made harbor filled with sand, and downcoast beaches were nearly completely stripped of sand; at first harbor was dredged periodically, and lately nearly continuously, with sand being dumped downcoast to maintain these beaches; although costly, and not always satisfactory in all details, this method has in general adequately performed its function.
