Boundary-shear stress in unsteady turbulent pipe flow
In laminar flow, instantaneous mean velocity and instantaneous velocity profile are dependent upon history of motivating force or piezometric-pressure gradient; in turbulent flow, strong lateral diffusion of turbulent eddies tends to eliminate dependence of velocity distribution upon history of motion; greater degree of generalization of results appears to be possible for unsteady turbulent flow in pipe than for laminar flow.
