Steel tapes for ordinary surveying and for more precise geodetic work are tested on steel bench in tape tunnel, underground passage, 7 ft. wide, 170 ft. long, extending between two buildings; geodetic comparator was designed especially for 50 m. tapes, but can also deal with lengths of 25, 30, 40 and 45 m.
