Asphalt replaces wood as filler in paving track
In rehabilitating street-car tracks in Salt Lake City reinforced-concrete slabs are being placed at each side of rails and immediately adjacent to rails heavy strip of asphaltic felt fitting directly under rail head, takes place of wood filler utilized in earlier construction with view to preventing slabs from breaking up from vibration of passing cars; former method of construction had short life in service; failure partly due to lean concrete.
