Impressions on road building in Europe
May 25: Impressions and observations of road practices and some other incidental engineering features gleaned during hurried trip through British Isles, France, and during brief side trip into Germany; European pavements; heavy construction on interurban highway between Glasgow and Edinburgh; treatments with tar and emulsified asphalt. June 25 and July 10: Surface treatment observed by writer in both France and Germany applied to waterbound macadam or as cover for stone-block pavements; washing and sweeping, operations most generally used in Germany and France; new and interesting method being developed; removing binder and surplus fines with compressed air; surface treatment in Germany; examples. July 25: Emulsified asphalt in penetration macadam; construction methods similar to those of United States; Leighton-Hockliffe road, Bedfordshire, England; main international road between Neuss and Aachen, Germany; Graf Recke street, Duesseldorf, Germany; emulsified asphalt penetration macadam on Nurburg Ring in Eifel Mountains, Germany; National Route 20 France. Aug. 10: Practice in construction of emulsified asphalt penetration macadam is more or less uniform in Germany, England, and France; tar macadam; penetration tar macadam; asphalt-concrete pavement in England and France; concrete, stone block, and miscellaneous pavement types; concrete pavement; plain concrete; reinforced concrete. Sept. 10: Cement macadam in Tulles, France; sodium-silicate pavement in Brives, France; Le Lorian Tunnel on Aurillac-Mural highway, which is 3000 ft. in length and was constructed in 1839; bridges; old bridge structures in France were constructed of masonry; precast reinforced-concrete bridge; grade crossings; rock production.
