Gas permeability of silica brick, mortar joints and masonry in open-hearth furnaces
Results of tests indicate that gas permeability of walls is due mainly to cracks in mortar joints; bricks and mortar joints free of cracks have little effect on permeability in the case of thick walls; great care should therefore be given to drying of mortar joints. (see also abstract in Stahl u. Eisen, vol. 48, no. 29, July 19, 1928, p. 973)
