Loudness, pitch and timbre of musical tones and their relation to intensity, frequency and overtone structure
Following textbooks, it is customary to say that three subjective characteristics of musical tone, namely, loudness, pitch and timber, are correlated directly with three physical quantities, namely, sound intensity, fundamental frequency of vibration, and overtone structure, respectively; experiments discussed which show that such simple one-to-one relationship does not exist.
