Concrete-lined two-track tunnel, 11 1/2 mi. long, 29 ft. wide, with mid-tunnel siding enlargement to 56 ft., constructed through loose rock, carrying Florence-Bologna line of Italian state railways across Apennine Mountains at elevation nearly 1000 ft. lower than that of old crossings; sequence of excavating and timbering operations in normal and in squeezing ground; stilling flow jets; method of opening and lining 56-ft. section; cost $24,735,000.
