Grampian hydro-electric power scheme
Aug. 7 no 3943 p 148-149: Development entailed building of dam across River Truim to divert its flood waters into Loch Ericht; to raise level of Loch Ericht, dam was built across River Ericht; total catchment area is 417.7 sq. mi.; details of temporary power scheme. Aug. 14 no 3944 p 165-168: Particulars of Truim diversion and Ericht dam which rises to height of 45 ft. above bed of river; arrangements for withdrawing water from reservoir formed by dam. Aug. 21 no 3945 p 190-193: Allt Ghlas dam of concrete and of gravity type, is 240 ft. long and rises to height of 17 ft. above bed of stream; main tunnel was driven to convey water from loch to power house; it is of horseshoe section with maximum width of 12 ft. 2 1/2 in.; tunnel crossing; Mheugaidh shaft and intake. Aug. 28 no 3946 p 218-220: Laid length of each pipe line is 2701.75 ft. and fall from valve house to turbines is 358 ft.; of two generating units in position each comprises vertical-spindle pressure-reaction-type turbine made by English Electric Co., designed to develop its full output of 22,000 hp. under net head of 515 ft. at speed of 500 r.p.m. and to work at maximum static head of 541 ft. Sept. 4 no 3947 p 239-240: Turbines are directly coupled to vertical-spindle alternators arranged immediately above them, made by British Thomson-Houston Co.; auxiliary arrangements in power house; power from 11-kv. switchboard is led by underground cables to outdoor substation, where voltage is transformed from 11 to 132 kv. and also to 33 kv.; substation is equipped with two 20,000-kva., 132-kv. transformers connected in series with boosters.
