Strain measurement in reinforcement for dome of natural history building
Slight outward movement of brick piers supporting dome over rotunda of building caused cracks along joints in masonry and in stone arches under them; to reinforce structure pendentives were surrounded by framework of structural steel; inwardly directed forces were exerted on masonry by many screw jacks, to prevent further movement; readings taken gage lines on framework using Whittemore strain gage.
