Effect on reinforced concrete in sodium chloride and sodium sulfate environments
Tests were conducted to verify whether chloride or sulfate is more aggressive ion in attacking reinforcing steel; specimens were subjected to alternate and partial immersion in saturated solutions of sodium chloride and sodium sulfate; locations of maximum anodic potentials on sample surfaces were measured; it is concluded that chlorides are more corrosive than sulfates, although steel embedded in concrete will ultimately corrode, regardless of media.
