Terrephragm system of diaphragm walling
System for constructing underground diaphragm walls operated in Great Britain by Terresearch Ltd and which uses ELSE deep trench cutting machine is described; operation involves cutting of trench aided by soil stabilizing technique permitting concrete to be poured directly into trench; soil stabilizing medium in use is thixotropic mud of bentonite in water which is capable of supporting trench sides even when ground is waterlogged; it is suitable for use in all types of soil from clay to quicksand; procedure is that of excavating trench constantly filled with mud and concreting by means of tremie pipe, under mud.
