Strengthening column pedestals of multi-Storey building
Elastic design method was adopted to strengthen concrete pedestals at base of several columns that was required during construction of reinforced concrete building near Adelaide, Australia; to apply 700 psi laterally, it was proposed to surround each pedestal with cylindrical steel sleeve having longitudinal slit; with slit wedged open, space between sleeve and pedestal was filled with concrete; workability of procedure was verified by laboratory tests; data on hoop stresses induced in sleeves by axial loading of concrete pedestals, due to Poisson effect.
