Soils investigation for rainy lake causeway
Soil conditions encountered at location of Rainy Lake Causeway in vicinity of Fort Frances, Ont, that is about 2.8 mi long and consists of alternating embankments and bridge structures are described; water depths are up to 50 ft and predominant soil stratum is loaded varved clay with maximum thickness of about 50 ft; it was concluded that total displacement of clay by embankments was essential and blasting tests were carried out to determine how this could be effected; borings were made through existing railroad fill; results of blasting tests, method of carrying out blasting in practice, and embankment construction are described.
