Interaction between sand and cylindrical shells under static and dynamic loading
Series of 14 static and 12 dynamic tests were conducted on three cylindrical shells in fine, dry, sand; each 4-in. diam shell (pipe) was placed in center of cylindrical container approximately 2 ft in diam and 2 ft in depth; uniformly distributed gas pressure was then applied to surface of soil sample and to capped end of pipe (top) both statically and dynamically to simulate loading by plane shock wave traveling in direction normal to surface of soil; measurements were made of gas pressure near surface of soil, of vertical pressure at various depths in soil and of vertical and circumferential strains in pipes at 4, 10 and 16 in. below surface.
