Earthquakes and earthquake-resistant buildings in Japan
Supposed causes of earthquakes and scales used for earthquake measurement are discussed; characteristics of earthquake motion, and effects of varying distance and ground nature as shown in damage to Japanese buildings are described; design philosophy is described in regard to both wooden and composite buildings; Japanese regulations for earthquake resistant construction are summarized, with information about seismic coefficients. (See also n 697 Aug 1964 p 955-7, n 698 Sept p 1114-18, n 699 Oct p 1257-60)
