Design of eight-lane long span orthotropic steel plate deck girder bridge to cross Mississippi, between East St. Louis and central business district of St. Louis is described; three-span tied arch truss was selected as most suitable of double-level structures; spans of 300, 500, 600, 500 and 265 ft were used for five-span, 2165-ft continuous structure; deck deflection under wheel loads especially in connection with wearing surface design is discussed; girder sections over channel piers are 70 ft in length and weigh 113 tons; other girder sections weigh as little as 54 tons.
