Two particular types of bridges in which deck girders are subject to state of stress depending on external loading and on self-adjusting forces due to geometric and elastic restraints of bridge are referred to; types with lower ties and types with upper ties are discussed and characteristics of each type, its potentialities and its special aspects examined; examples of such bridges are presented. (See also n 695 June 1964 p 705, 707, 709, 711, 713)
