A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Reference is made to Widnes Transporter Bridge, inadequacy of which led to investigation and report on project for entirely new bridge; objection to siting of one of river piers led to abandonment of truss scheme in favor of suspension bridge with central span of 1030 ft; certain unusual aerodynamic problems were encountered in this scheme, which led to reinvestigation of arch bridge scheme, which was ultimately adopted; arch bridge has central span of 1082 ft, side spans of 250 ft, and overall length of 1628 ft; details of design and construction, and costs are given; general details of calculations.
