Design and construction of kingsferry lifting bridge, isle of sheppey
Design and construction of bridge that carries single-track railway and 24 ft roadway and 6 ft footpath; opening span is of vertical lift type and is designed to provide navigation opening 90 ft wide and 95 ft high above high watermark; there are three side spans, 80, 86, and 80 ft respectively, on either side of navigation opening, followed by hollow box abutments approximately 175 ft long, and incorporating on mainland side access bridge under approach roads; approach embankments on either side of bridge are built on very weak subsoil, and required special precautions in their construction.
